Abstract:

The paper is a response to the article In Defense of the Standard Language (Matasović 2020) and discusses several issues in relation to language standardization and language planning ‒ ideology in general, the relation of the standard dialect and nationalism, the nature and function of the standard dialect, standard dialect speakers, “usage guides” and the lektori, ideology of standard language and language change.
